Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one.
I died and behold I am alive forevermore,
and I have the keys of Death and Hades.
- Jesus, Revelation 1: 17, 18
There are 2 3-word sentences that have tremendous impact in our world. These 2 sentences define the Easter season, have brought hope to billions, and continue to give life to all who believe.
In fact, these 2 3-word sentences are at the heart of Christianity and bring unity across all denominations in multiple languages and cultures all over the world.
One was spoken by Jesus; the other by a messenger from heaven.
One was spoken on what we call, “Good Friday.”
The other came on that first Easter morning.
One speaks to our forgiveness.
The other to our future.
Both capture all that we put our faith in.
On the cross, Jesus said, “It is finished.”
In the tomb, an angel said, “He is risen.”
The first brought an end to a life. The second spoke to the beginning of life, resurrected life.
“It is finished.” The debt is paid. The blood of Christ given for our sin. The work of Christ completed on the cross. “It is finished.” There is nothing left to be done. It is done.
“He is risen.” A new model is given. The world has changed. There is a resurrected Savior. The proof is in His life. We too will rise to a new life in Christ. He has shown us how.
This is why we stop, observe, and celebrate every year. It is at the core of what we believe. It is why we call ourselves, “Christian.”
If you are a follower of Jesus, these two sentences, 3-words each in our heart language define who we truly are – followers of the One of whom we can say, “It is finished. He is risen.”
