What Is Baptism All About?

The Bible teaches that baptism is the first step of obedience in your commitment to Christ. Baptism allows a believer to communicate to the world their commitment to Christ. People often have questions regarding baptism: Why should I be baptized? I’ve already been baptized. Do I have to do it again? Does it matter if someone is sprinkled or dunked?

Jesus directed us to baptize new believers.

Matthew 28:19, 20 “”Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Baptism demonstrates our faith in Jesus.

Mark 16:16 “”Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.””

When we are baptized we are forgiven of all our sins and receive the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:38 “”Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

The word “baptize” means to “immerse” and is a symbol of dieing to our old way of life and beginning a new life, made new by God.

What Baptism Means to a Follower of Jesus.

Baptism unites us with Jesus and also with other Christ Followers.

Romans 6:3-6 “”Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin–”

1 Corinthians 12:13 “”For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body–whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free–and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.”
